Keith Brautigam CIO Portfolio

The projects below show how Keith Brautigam has approached large security and IT changes, from single sign-on and multi-factor authentication to identity governance and organizational design. Each one outlines the starting point, what he led, and the measurable result.

Modernizing Web Single Sign-On on Microsoft Entra ID

Context. A large public research university relied on a legacy Web Single Sign-On platform for hundreds of applications. Moving to Microsoft Entra ID offered stronger security and more value from the organization’s existing Microsoft contract.

What Keith led. Keith Brautigam secured buy-in from executives and IT leaders across the institution, then directed the migration of applications off the legacy platform.

Result. More than 500 applications moved to the new platform in 12 months.

Changing the Multi-Factor Authentication Platform

Context. At the university, multi-factor authentication was a core layer of protection for student, faculty, and staff accounts.

What Keith led. Keith initiated a platform change for multi-factor authentication and led the implementation of the new product.

Result. Stronger account security and $500,000 in annual savings.

Related work. In a separate initiative, Keith directed the onboarding of 80,000 users to an MFA solution in three months.

Shields Up: Applying CISA Best Practices Enterprise-Wide

Context. As Chief Information Security Officer, Keith Brautigam led an information security program that supported more than 200,000 students, faculty, and staff and protected over $1 billion in annual research expenditures.

What Keith led. He planned and implemented Shields Up, an enterprise-wide initiative based on best practices from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Result. Stronger protection for the organization’s network, devices, and business email.

Reorganizing a 600-Person Central IT Department

Context. The university’s 600-person central IT department needed a structure that matched the services stakeholders relied on and gave managers a workable span of control.

What Keith led. As Deputy CIO, Keith led the reorganization of the department.

Result. Services aligned with key stakeholders and an improved span of control across the organization.

Implementing Enterprise Identity Governance

Context. Managing access for 1.2 million user accounts required consistent, role-based controls and timely provisioning, along with access reviews for ERP systems to meet compliance obligations.

What Keith led. Keith led the selection and implementation of an enterprise identity governance system providing access request, fulfillment, and certification capabilities.

Result. Improved role-based access control and streamlined service provisioning and management across 1.2 million user accounts.

Keith Brautigam’s Global IAM Program at Hunter Douglas

Context. When Keith joined Hunter Douglas in March 2024 as Global Cybersecurity Director of Identity and Access Management, the company needed an IAM program established quickly, along with access controls that met SOX requirements.

What Keith led. He built the program’s strategy, staffing, and software, and led a fast-paced, six-month identity governance implementation across North America and EMEA to replace legacy systems. He also designed a solution architecture for global access management covering privileged account management, unified single sign-on, and privileged remote access, and partnered with IT and business leaders to secure critical HR and finance systems.

Result. A functioning IAM team and identity governance platform supporting SOX compliance, with security controls for HR and finance systems that met regulatory requirements in multiple countries.
